EEE 3032 - Communication Systems - Fall 2022

Course Description:

This course presents an introduction to analog and digital communication systems. The main topics are: a review of the Fourier transform; representations of bandpass signals; random signals in communications, including stationarity, ergodicity, correlation, power spectra and noise; amplitude and frequency modulation; frequency division multiplexing; baseband digital communication; time division multiplexing; and an introduction to basic digital modulation schemes, such as BPSK, FSK and QPSK.


Probability theory and linear system courses are the required prerequisites for this course. You will also be expected to be able to program in MATLAB.

The final exam will be taken on Tuesday, December 6, 12:00 to 15:00, in class (21534). You will be allowed to bring one sheet of notes (both sides fine) into the exam along with calculators.

The following topics will be tested in your final exam:
1) FM demodulation via discriminator (Note #12)
2) FM demodulation via PLL (Note #13)
3) Random process, correlation and power spectral density, and narrowband noise (Notes #19, 20, 21, 22, 23)
4) SNR analysis for DSB/AM/SSB and FM (Notes #24, 25, 26)
5) PCM and its SNR performance in quantization & channel noise (Note #28)
6) Digital modulation and its BER performance in AWGN (Note #29)
7) Matched-filtering (MF) (Notes #30, 31)

Note that the pre-recorded lectures #1, 2, 3 at iCampus on 14th week cover both Matched-Filtering (MF) and Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI).
But the ISI issue will not be tested in the final exam at this time.
